Nerve Root Block

Your relief from pain is our #1 priority.
Don't wait to get treatment after an auto accident.

A nerve root block, also known as a nerve block injection or epidural steroid injection, is a minimally invasive procedure used to relieve pain and inflammation associated with nerve compression or irritation. It involves the injection of a local anesthetic and corticosteroid medication directly into the area around a nerve root, typically in the spine, to reduce pain and improve function.

Nerve root blocks are commonly used to treat conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica, and other sources of nerve-related pain. It is usually considered after more conservative treatments like chiropractic care and physical therapy.

By targeting the specific nerve root involved in the underlying spinal condition, nerve root blocks provide precise and targeted pain relief, allowing individuals to experience reduced discomfort and improved function with minimal downtime and fewer side effects compared to other treatment options.

Our team of doctors, chiropractors, and physical therapists have helped countless patients in Georgia. If you have been hurt in an accident, we can connect you with a personal injury lawyer. Call us today at 1-800-HURT911® or 404-687-9000!

Conditions Treated With Nerve Root Block

Nerve root blocks are used to treat a variety of conditions that involve compression or irritation of nerve roots in the spine, including:

Herniated Disc

A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner core of a spinal disc bulges or ruptures, putting pressure on nearby nerve roots. Nerve root blocks can help alleviate pain and inflammation associated with herniated discs, particularly when conservative treatments have failed to provide relief.

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal or intervertebral foramina, which can compress nerve roots and cause pain, numbness, or weakness in the extremities. Nerve root blocks can help relieve symptoms of spinal stenosis by reducing pressure on the affected nerve roots.

Sciatica

Sciatica is a common symptom of underlying spinal conditions such as herniated discs or spinal stenosis, characterized by pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates from the lower back down the leg. Nerve root blocks can target the specific nerve roots involved in sciatica to provide pain relief and improve function.

Radiculopathy

Radiculopathy refers to pain, weakness, or sensory disturbances that result from compression or irritation of nerve roots in the spine. Nerve root blocks can help alleviate symptoms of radiculopathy by reducing inflammation and improving nerve function.

Facet Joint Syndrome

Facet joint syndrome is a condition characterized by inflammation or degeneration of the facet joints in the spine, which can irritate nearby nerve roots and cause pain. Nerve root blocks can provide targeted pain relief by blocking the transmission of pain signals from the affected nerve roots.

How Nerve Root Block Works

A nerve root block works by delivering a combination of local anesthetic and corticosteroid medication directly to the site of nerve compression or irritation. The local anesthetic numbs the nerve fibers, temporarily blocking pain signals from being transmitted to the brain. This provides immediate pain relief, allowing individuals to experience reduced discomfort and improved function.

Additionally, the corticosteroid medication helps reduce inflammation and swelling around the nerve root, providing longer-lasting pain relief and promoting healing. Corticosteroids have potent anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce tissue inflammation and decrease pressure on the nerve root, thereby alleviating pain and improving symptoms over time.

By targeting the specific nerve root involved in the underlying spinal condition, nerve root blocks provide precise and targeted pain relief, minimizing the need for systemic medications or invasive surgical procedures. This minimally invasive approach allows individuals to experience significant pain relief with minimal downtime and fewer side effects compared to other treatment options.

What Happens During the Procedure

During a nerve root block procedure, the individual will typically be positioned lying face down on an X-ray table or fluoroscopy machine to allow for visualization of the spine. The skin overlying the injection site will be cleaned and sterilized, and a local anesthetic may be applied to numb the area.

Using fluoroscopic guidance, the healthcare provider will insert a thin needle into the area surrounding the affected nerve root in the spine. Fluoroscopy allows for real-time imaging of the needle placement, ensuring accurate placement and delivery of the medication to the target site.

Once the needle is positioned correctly, a combination of local anesthetic and corticosteroid medication is injected into the epidural space surrounding the nerve root. The local anesthetic provides immediate pain relief, while the corticosteroid medication helps reduce inflammation and provide longer-lasting relief.

After the injection, the individual may be monitored for a short period in the recovery area to ensure there are no immediate complications. Some individuals may experience temporary numbness or weakness in the affected limb due to the local anesthetic, but this typically resolves within a few hours.

Most individuals can resume normal activities shortly after the procedure, although some may experience mild soreness or discomfort at the injection site. It is essential to follow any post-procedure instructions provided by the healthcare provider, including rest, activity modification, and follow-up appointments.

Ari, "J," Dreka, and Dr. Correa — y'all are absolutely incredible. From the moment I walked into Hurt 911 after my accident, I felt taken care of like family. Ari was patient, professional, and made the whole process easy to understand. "J" went above and beyond every single time I came in — always with a smile, always making me feel like I was the most important patient in the building. Dreka has been a bright light during what could have been a rough recovery — kind, attentive, and just genuinely awesome to work with. And Dr. Correa — I can't say enough. He has been outstanding. Every visit I leave feeling better than I came in. He listens, he explains, he actually cares about the recovery — not just the appointment. I'm noticeably feeling stronger and moving better thanks to his treatment plan. This team has made me feel special, valued, and well-cared-for since day one. If you're hurt and trying to figure out where to go, this is the place. Hurt 911 has the right people doing the right work, and I'm grateful every time I walk through their door. Five stars all day, every day. Thank you Ari, "J," Dreka, and Dr. Correa — y'all are the real deal.
