Degenerative Disc Disease

Your relief from pain is our #1 priority.
Don't wait to get treatment after an auto accident.

Degenerative Disc Disease is a condition where the spinal discs wear down, often leading to pain and stiffness. This common condition affects the intervertebral discs of the spine. These discs are soft, rubbery cushions located between the vertebrae, which act as shock absorbers and provide flexibility to the spine.

Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) is characterized by the gradual deterioration or breakdown of these discs over time, leading to various symptoms and discomfort.

Our team of doctors, chiropractors, and physical therapists have helped countless patients in Georgia. Call us today at 1-800-HURT911® or 404-687-9000!

Causes of Degenerative Disc Disease

Several factors contribute to the development of degenerative disc disease.

Aging

The natural aging process is the primary cause of degenerative disc disease. As we age, the discs lose water content and elasticity, making them less flexible and more prone to wear and tear.

Genetics

Genetic factors can predispose individuals to degenerative disc disease. Certain inherited traits may affect the structure and composition of the intervertebral discs, increasing the risk of disc degeneration.

Trauma

Injuries or trauma to the spine, such as sudden impacts or repetitive stress, can accelerate disc degeneration and contribute to the development of DDD.

Lifestyle Factors

Poor posture, improper lifting techniques, obesity, smoking, and sedentary lifestyle habits can also increase the risk of degenerative disc disease by placing excessive strain on the spinal discs and surrounding structures.

Symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease

The symptoms of degenerative disc disease can vary depending on the location and severity of the disc degeneration. Common symptoms include the following.

Chronic Back Pain

Persistent, dull, or sharp pain in the lower back or neck is a hallmark symptom of degenerative disc disease. The pain may worsen with movement, prolonged sitting, bending, or lifting.

Radiating Pain

DDD can cause radiating pain that extends to the buttocks, thighs, or arms, depending on the location of the affected discs. This pain may be accompanied by tingling, numbness, or weakness in the extremities.

Stiffness and Reduced Mobility

Stiffness and reduced range of motion in the spine are common symptoms of DDD, making it difficult to perform everyday activities and movements.

Pain Relief with Rest

Many individuals with degenerative disc disease experience temporary relief from pain when lying down or resting, as this reduces pressure on the affected discs.

Treatments for Degenerative Disc Disease

Treatment options for degenerative disc disease aim to alleviate symptoms, improve spinal function, and enhance the quality of life. Depending on the severity of the condition, treatment may include the following.

Pain Management

Over-the-counter or prescription medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), muscle relaxants, or pain relievers, can help alleviate pain and discomfort associated with degenerative disc disease.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy programs are designed to strengthen the muscles supporting the spine, improve flexibility, and promote proper posture and body mechanics. Therapeutic exercises, stretching techniques, and manual therapy may be included in the treatment plan.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic adjustments and spinal manipulation techniques can help alleviate pain, improve spinal alignment, and reduce pressure on the affected discs and nerves. Chiropractors may also recommend decompression therapy or other specialized treatments for DDD.

Lifestyle Modifications

Adopting healthy lifestyle habits, such as maintaining a healthy weight, practicing good posture, avoiding heavy lifting or repetitive motions, and quitting smoking, can help slow down the progression of degenerative disc disease and reduce the risk of complications.

Surgery

In severe cases of degenerative disc disease that do not respond to conservative treatments, surgical intervention may be considered. Surgical options include discectomy (removal of the damaged disc), spinal fusion, or artificial disc replacement to stabilize the spine and relieve pressure on the nerves.

Conclusion

Degenerative disc disease is a common spinal condition characterized by the gradual deterioration of the intervertebral discs. While DDD can cause chronic pain and discomfort, there are various treatment options available to manage symptoms, improve spinal function, and enhance overall quality of life.

Consultation with healthcare professionals, such as physicians, chiropractors, and physical therapists, is essential to develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to the individual needs and goals of each patient.

Ari, "J," Dreka, and Dr. Correa — y'all are absolutely incredible. From the moment I walked into Hurt 911 after my accident, I felt taken care of like family. Ari was patient, professional, and made the whole process easy to understand. "J" went above and beyond every single time I came in — always with a smile, always making me feel like I was the most important patient in the building. Dreka has been a bright light during what could have been a rough recovery — kind, attentive, and just genuinely awesome to work with. And Dr. Correa — I can't say enough. He has been outstanding. Every visit I leave feeling better than I came in. He listens, he explains, he actually cares about the recovery — not just the appointment. I'm noticeably feeling stronger and moving better thanks to his treatment plan. This team has made me feel special, valued, and well-cared-for since day one. If you're hurt and trying to figure out where to go, this is the place. Hurt 911 has the right people doing the right work, and I'm grateful every time I walk through their door. Five stars all day, every day. Thank you Ari, "J," Dreka, and Dr. Correa — y'all are the real deal.
